❄️ Inspirational Corner: Wisdom from the Lion's Den
As we enter December, we reflect on the year's journey and look ahead with hope. This season is a perfect time to embrace the warmth of our community and the strength of our values.
On Our Core Values for the Season
-
Justice: "In this season of giving, let justice be our guide. It means ensuring everyone in our 'pride' has what they need to thrive and that kindness is a gift we give freely to all."
-
Honor: "We honor the close of the year by reflecting on our growth. Let us finish strong, acting with integrity and celebrating the hard work of every student and staff member."
-
Self-Discipline: "The excitement of the holidays is here! Self-discipline is the quiet strength that helps us stay focused on learning and make positive choices, even when the snow is falling."
On Community & Connection
-
"Like snowflakes, each of us is unique, but when we stick together, we can create a beautiful winter wonderland of learning and support."
-
"The warmth of our PS192 community is the best defense against the winter chill. Let's continue to lift each other up and share the joy of the season."
-
"Joyful learning is a light that shines brightest in the darkest days of winter. Together, parents, teachers, and students keep that light glowing."
Short "Lion Spirit" Fillers
-
"Roar with warmth, lead with kindness, and learn with joy this December!"
-
"Finish the year strong with Justice, Honor, and Self-Discipline."
-
"At PS192, our pride runs deep, no matter the season."
A Note to Our Families "The warmth we create in our homes becomes the light our children carry into the world. In this busy season, the greatest gift we can give them is our presence, patience, and positive example. Let our actions reflect the kindness and integrity we wish to see in them. Together, we are building a future brighter than any holiday light. 🏫✨"

Did you know that December holds a fascinating place in New York City's history, especially when it comes to education and learning? Here are some lesser-known facts to share with parents and the school community:
Early Ed and the "Charity Schools"
-
Before Public Schools: In the early 19th century, before widespread public education, many NYC children attended "charity schools" run by religious or philanthropic organizations. These schools often provided the only formal education available to children from low-income families.
-
The Free School Society: In December 1805, the Free School Society was founded in NYC. This organization played a crucial role in establishing a system of free, non-sectarian schools for poor children, eventually paving the way for the city's public school system.
The Rise of Higher Learning
-
Columbia University's Growth: Columbia University, originally King's College, saw significant expansion in the 19th century. In December 1857, the university moved to its current location in Morningside Heights, marking a major milestone in its history and the development of higher education in the city.
-
The City College of New York: In December 1847, the Free Academy of the City of New York, later known as the City College of New York (CCNY), was established. This institution provided free higher education to qualified students, regardless of their financial background, making college accessible to a wider range of New Yorkers.
Libraries as Learning Hubs
-
The New York Public Library: The New York Public Library (NYPL) has a rich history of promoting literacy and learning. In December 1895, the Astor Library and the Lenox Library consolidated with the Tilden Trust to form the NYPL, creating one of the world's largest and most comprehensive library systems.
-
Carnegie Libraries: In December 1901, industrialist Andrew Carnegie donated $5.2 million to build branch libraries throughout NYC. These libraries became vital community centers, offering educational resources and programs for people of all ages.
Innovative Educational Initiatives
-
The Children's Museum of Manhattan: In December 1973, the Children's Museum of Manhattan (CMOM) opened its doors. This interactive museum has provided countless children with engaging educational experiences, fostering a love of learning through play and exploration.
-
The New York Hall of Science: In December 1964, the New York Hall of Science (NYSCI) was established as part of the World's Fair. This hands-on science museum has inspired generations of students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
These are just a few examples of the many ways December has played a role in the history of education and learning in New York City. By sharing these facts, we can help parents and the school community appreciate the rich educational heritage of their city and inspire them to continue supporting learning initiatives for all children.
